Inspired by late husband, Rouse completes painful triathlon

In addition to a broken wrist, Rouse, 54, competed in the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and marathon with a broken shoulder blade and a cracked rib, all suffered in a nasty fall during her last long training ride three weeks before Saturday's event. What motivated Rouse to attempt the iconic triathlon despite her injuries was not the glory of being an Ironman finisher, but the memory of her husband. An avid triathlete, Larry Doug Rouse was killed in a motorcycle accident in Canada in June as he was returning to Houston from Alaska, where she had just completed a marathon as part of a dream trip. Larry Doug Rouse was alive when his wife, a two-time Ironman finisher, decided to enter The Woodlands race after watching the inaugural event in May 2011. When she picked up her race packet, he was listed as her emergency contact. After she tumbled from her bike, Rouse resigned herself to missing the triathlon. Though she needs surgery on her wrist, when her doctor said she wouldn't make her injuries worse - unless she fell - she made a tentative decision. The hardest leg of the race was the hilly bike course, she said. Because she was unable to shift gears with her dominant right hand, she had to sit up on the bike and reach across with her left hand, being cautious to maintain her balance.
