British Airways starts automatic check-in service. But is this new?
by CNNGo Staff
Waiting in line at the airport to check-in is a nuisance for everyone, and British Airways (BA) is claiming that by the end of next year, this will come to an end.
According to various media outlets, the airline is trialing a new service that will automatically check in passengers ahead of their flight -- part of a 5 billion (US$8.12 billion) investment program that BA is rolling out to improve passenger experience.
Selected BA passengers departing from French airports from this month will be checked in 24 hours prior to their flight, assigned a seat and allocated electronic boarding passes. All without having to wait.
?Customers have so much to think about prior to a trip, be that finishing up in the office or getting the kids? suitcases packed," said Frank van der Post, the airline's managing director of brands and customer experience.
"We?re aiming to give them one less thing to think about by giving them the choice to be checked in automatically and sent their boarding pass electronically. Then they just need to drop off any bags and make their way to the plane."

Interactive: Dive the Great Barrier Reef with Google Maps
by Hiufu Wong
Follow the turtle, via your mouse
Dying to see the Great Barrier Reef but don't fancy the flight Down Under? You may soon want to cast Google Maps in the role of your personal travel savior.
For the first time, Google Maps' Street View has ventured beneath the sea to capture six of the world's best living coral reefs -- three along the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, Apo Island in the Philippines, Hanauma Bay in Hawaii and Molokini crater in Maui -- in panoramic, interactive sequences.
You can swim with a manta ray, track a turtle or follow a bunch of snorkelers thanks to The Catlin Seaview Survey, a major scientific study of the world?s reefs, which used a specially designed camera to capture the images.

Gotye remix blends music with video technology
Technology and a good tune mix thanks to a computer wizard's creation.
Gotye?s ?Somebody That I Used to Know? has already beenNo. 1in Google Play but now a new version of the song is up on YouTube that?s worth checking out. ?Gotye - Somebody That I Used to Know - Old School Computer Remix? was created by a guy in Canada who knows a thing or two about technology.
A HP Scanjet 3C somehow sits in for the vocals. Two hard drives pull off drums and a cymbal. And a xylophone is controlled by a PIC16F84A microcontroller.
Regarding the Scanjet?s vocals, the video creator says they lag a bit. ?In order for the stepper motor to play a note it has to be moving and with that large carriage it takes a few milli seconds before it can play a note. It doesn't sound like a lot of time but stretch that over a 4 minute song and voila ... out of sync. Programming does help to compensate but it is not perfect,? explains YouTube user BD594.
The tech wizard has lots of interesting videos on his channel and altogether has more than 6 million views for them. They include titles such as ?Robot Band covers Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger featuring Stephen Hawkings DECtalk Vocals? and ?Little Drummer Boy Performed by Robot Snare Drum and HP Scanner.?
These kinds of videos involve a bit of work, but if the ingenuity garners enough views BD594 could make money on advertising should he decide to employ it.
Is BD594?s investment in time worth it? You decide.

TSA gadget theft still a risk; iPad tracked to agent's house
The list of horror stories about gadget theft by Transportation Security Administration agents just got a little longer, with ABC News catching one officer in the act of stealing an iPad.
In an investigation of ten major U.S. airports, ABC News checked luggage containing iPads and cash, and purposely left behind iPads at TSA security checkpoints. Although all the checked luggage arrived safely, and nearly all checkpoint officers called travelers back to claim their iPads, one officer in Orlando instead grabbed the iPad at a security checkpoint and took it to his home, 30 miles away.
When confronted two weeks later, the agent, Andy Ramirez, claimed that his wife took the iPad from the airport, despite video evidence of him handling the device. The TSA then fired him.
The agency claims that widespread theft isn't a problem, noting that only 0.5 percent of officers employed by the TSA have been terminated for stealing. In total, 381 officers have been fired between 2003 and 2012, including 11 this year.
But one termination out of every 200 employees isn't exactly stellar, and doesn't account for employees who haven't been caught. U.S. Rep. John Mica (R-Florida), who serves on the House Transportation Committee, said the latest iPad theft is just ?the tip of the iceberg.? He accused the TSA of failing to perform proper background checks on employees to root out bad apples.
A former TSA agent, Pythias Brown, who recently got out of jail for stealing, also told ABC News that the problem is widespread. Brown, who worked the screening machine at Newark, relied on tips from colleagues when overhead cameras weren't working. Over four years, Brown stole $800,000 worth of items, and said he wasn't the only one.
Besides, there's plenty of anecdotal evidence of TSA agents stealing expensive electronics. Here are a few examples:
- In January, a baggage screener in Orlando was arrested for allegedly lifting goods from checked bags, using a laptop-sized hidden pocket in his work jacket, and then selling the wares on Craigslist.
- In July 2011, a TSA employee in Fort Lauderdale was arrested after allegedly removing an iPad from a bag and stuffing it into his pants pocket. He later told authorities that he'd stolen $50,000 worth of electronics, and would typically sell the goods online before his shift had ended.
- At Dallas/Forth Worth, an agent was caught in April for stealing eight iPads over an eight-month period.
Seeing as this isn't a new issue, and the TSA isn't willing to publicly admit that it's a widespread problem, don't expect horror stories like these to go away.
If you're flying with expensive electronics, always keep them in your carry-on bags instead of checking them, and keep your eyes on your gadgets while heading through security checkpoints. For added protection, iPhone and iPad users can install Apple's ?Find my iPhone/iPad? service to track missing devices, and Android users can install third-party device location services, such as LookOut Plan B and AndroidLost.

The Creators Project returns to Seoul with more bleeding-edge art and music
by CNNGo staff
Anyone who has heard of The Creators Project will have a vague idea that it has something to do with art and music and cool stuff in general; but not a lot of people seem to know exactly what it entails.
The official website calls the three-year-old project "a global celebration of art and technology," that has supported 150 artists around the world. A collaboration between Vice Magazine and Intel, the project features a series of traveling events showcasing "large-scale audiovisual installations" and musical performances.
So, yeah, like we said, art and music and cool stuff in general.
The first showcase for 2012 was held in San Francisco. Seoul is one of the other four host cities, namely Beijing, Paris, So Paulo and New York City.
This year's Creators Project Seoul takes place September 21-23 at the new Dongdaemun Design Plaza designed by Anglo-Iraqi architect Dame Zaha Hadid. While the actual stadium is still under construction, the project is taking over the event space and the public park.

Kelsey Grammer Bails on Piers Morgan Interview Due to Photo of Ex-Wife
Kelsey Grammer took a new tact in his never-ending feud with Camille Grammer yesterday.
Instead of slamming his ex-wife in public - did you know they stopped having sex during their marriage?!? - Kelsey simply bailed on an interview with Piers Morgan because producers showed a photo of Camille at the outset of the Morgan's CNN talk show last night.
The host simply couldn't believe the reaction.
"Kelsey Grammer was supposed to be on my show now but ran out of the building. Strange," Morgan Tweeted, adding:
"Kelsey Grammer saw a photo of his ex wife Camille in the open to our show and legged it. Extraordinary. Never had this happen before... I had a very friendly chat with Kelsey backstage. He said he was really looking forward to the interview... this was a shockingly unprofessional thing to do. I wasn't even going to mention his ex-wife!"
In response to the incident, a rep for the actor responded via statement: "Piers needs to take responsibility for what he did to Kelsey. It's called accountability.
Speaking of which: Pssst, Kelsey. Perhaps these sorts of situations are why you were supposedly snubbed for an Emmy.
