Sanding the mallet head

On the lathe, the mallet starts as an octagonal cylinder. After the mallet is tapered, a brief sanding smoothes out any rough areas. Because the poplar used in the rest of the mallet head is not nearly as hard as the rosewood, a ridge at the joint between the two woods form. Sanding minimizes the ridge but does not eliminate it.
