Gallegos hospitalized in 'grave' condition

A few weeks after the transplant, the weakened and still seriously ill senator installed a hospital bed in the office of the sergeant-at-arms in the Capitol, against doctor's orders, so he could cast a vote in opposition to a bill that would have required a photo ID to vote. In the Legislature he has never been a tactician, even as he championed issues of interest to the Hispanic community, including minority hiring, public education and redistricting. Gallegos has accused the superintendent of scapegoating teachers, centralizing decision-making in his HISD office and firing teachers and administrators from schools in Gallegos' Senate district. Opposition to HISD's Apollo 20 program, which Grier designed to rescue failing schools, became a cause clbre for the veteran lawmaker.
